UNSC examines Russian anti-terror proposal

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 06 (MNA) – The members of the UN Security Council are in a process of consultations on a draft resolution presented by Russia to fight terrorism, confirmed Spanish ambassador Roman Oyarzun on Monday.

"Indeed, Russia circulated last week the draft resolution, and as it is customary, a process of examination has been opened; I cannot make any further comment ," the diplomat, who is presiding over the 15 member-UNSC this month, told journalists.

Moscow is promoting within the Council the initiative that is looking for a new view in the struggle against terrorists and violent extremists like those hitting regions in the Middle East and Northern Africa.

According to the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, the proposal promotes cooperation among states to face the scourge, and includes a call by the affected nations to take part in the struggle against it.

The text is part of Russia's joining the bombings at targets of the ISIL in Syrian territory, at a request from President Bashar al-Assad.

The West and some Arab allies question the initiative presented in the Security Council and the air incursions in Syria, even though the United States is leading a coalition that has been attacking the fundamentalists for several months.

They question the alleged Moscow's intention to support Al Assad in the internal conflict, a view rejected by Lavrov, who said the bombings are aimed at neutralizing the ISIL.

Our actions have the same targets as those of the coalition, why they question us and not them, Lavrov wondered in remarks to journalists here last week.

The fate of the resolution rises expectations due to the veto power of the United States, France and the United Kingdom, along with Russia and China, which are the five permanent members of the UNSC.
